Ingredients
For the Mashed Potatoes
- 4–5 russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 tablespoons butter
- ½–¾ cup milk (adjust for desired creaminess)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the Beef and Gravy
- 1½ pounds beef (such as chuck steak, stew meat, or ground beef)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional, for extra depth)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
- In a large pot, add the peeled and cubed potatoes along with the chopped onion.
- Cover with cold water, add a pinch of salt, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Drain the water, then return the potatoes and onions to the pot.
- Add butter and milk, and mash until smooth and creamy.
- Season generously with salt and pepper to taste. Cover and keep warm.
Step 2: Cook the Beef and Make the Gravy
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the beef and cook until browned on all sides (if using ground beef, cook until no longer pink).
- Remove beef from the pan and set aside, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
- Add the chopped onion and garlic; sauté until soft and fragrant, about 3–4 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute to form a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth and slightly thickened.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce.
- Return the beef to the skillet and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens and the beef is tender.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
Step 3: Assemble and Serve
- Spoon the warm mashed potatoes onto plates or bowls.
- Generously ladle the beef and gravy over the top.
- Garnish with chopped parsley and a sprinkle of black pepper if desired.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve with buttered peas, roasted carrots, or steamed green beans for a full meal.
- Add a side of flaky biscuits or crusty bread to soak up the extra gravy.
Tips & Variations
- For extra richness: Stir a spoonful of sour cream into the mashed potatoes.
- Make it mushroom-style: Add 1 cup sliced mushrooms to the gravy with the onions.
- Slow Cooker Option: Combine all beef and gravy ingredients in a slow cooker and cook on Low for 6–7 hours. Make the mashed potatoes separately before serving.
