Crock Pot Chicken and Dumplings — The Ultimate Comfort Food

This Crock Pot Chicken and Dumplings recipe is the definition of cozy comfort in a bowl — tender shredded chicken, creamy broth, flavorful veggies, and fluffy biscuit dumplings cooked to perfection. With minimal prep and no-fuss slow cooking, this recipe makes a hearty, satisfying meal your whole family will love!

Time

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 5–6 hours (on LOW) or 3–4 hours (on HIGH)
  • Total Time: Up to 6 hours
  • Servings: 6

Ingredients

For the Chicken Base:

  • 1½ lbs (about 3 medium) boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of chicken soup
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of celery soup (or use another cream of chicken if preferred)
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning (optional but adds great flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon butter

For the Dumplings:

  • 1 (16 oz) can refrigerated biscuit dough (like Pillsbury Grands)
  • ½ cup frozen peas (optional, for color and sweetness)

Instructions

 Prepare the Crock Pot Base

In your slow cooker, combine:
chicken breasts, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, both soups, chicken broth, butter, salt, pepper, thyme, and poultry seasoning.
Stir gently to mix everything together.

 Slow Cook

Cover and cook:

  • On LOW for 5–6 hours, or
  • On HIGH for 3–4 hours,
until the chicken is fully cooked and tender.

 Shred the Chicken

Remove the cooked chicken and shred it using two forks.
Return the shredded chicken to the slow cooker and stir well.

Tip: At this stage, you can add the frozen peas if using.

 Add the Dumplings

Open the biscuit dough and cut each biscuit into 4–6 small pieces (like bite-sized dumplings).
Gently stir them into the slow cooker mixture, making sure they’re evenly distributed but not fully submerged.

Pro Tip: To keep them fluffy, don’t stir too much after adding the dough — just let them sit on top and cook through the steam.

 Cook Until Fluffy

Cover and cook on HIGH for another 1 hour, or until the biscuits are cooked through and no longer doughy in the center.
Stir gently before serving to mix everything into the creamy sauce.

 Serve and Enjoy

Serve warm, garnished with a sprinkle of fresh parsley or cracked pepper.

Pair it with:

  • A crisp green salad
  • Steamed green beans
  • Or just a cozy night in!

Optional Add-Ins

  • Add 1 cup of corn or green beans for extra veggies.
  • Stir in ¼ cup of heavy cream before serving for a richer broth.
  • Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese for a savory twist.

Tips for Success

  • Thicken the sauce: If the broth is too thin, stir in a cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water) during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  • Don’t overmix: Once you add the biscuit dough, avoid excessive stirring — that’s how you keep the dumplings light and fluffy.
  • Use chicken thighs: For even more tenderness and flavor.

Why You’ll Love It

This Crock Pot Chicken and Dumplings is everything comfort food should be — creamy, hearty, and soul-warming. The slow cooker does all the work, while you end up with a dish that tastes like it simmered on the stove all day. It’s perfect for cold evenings, family dinners, or meal prep.
